The Community Fund

The Community Fund was established in 2023 as a flexible and powerful way for donors to support the most pressing needs across Marion County for today and into the future. Designed for individuals who feel deeply connected to our community but may be unsure where their gift can make the greatest impact, the Community Fund directs philanthropic resources where they are needed most, when they are needed most.

Through this fund, the Community Foundation addresses broad community challenges through several targeted focus areas. These focus areas include:

Disaster & Crisis Relief

Enables the Community Foundation to respond quickly when unexpected events impact Marion County. Funding may provide nonprofits the opportunity to provide emergency assistance to affected families, support nonprofits facing operational disruptions, and help coordinate community recovery efforts, ensuring resources are available to help the community recover and rebuild when crises arise.

Housing & Homelessness

Supports efforts that promote safe, stable housing for individuals and families in Marion County. Grants may assist organizations addressing homelessness, help nonprofits serve families so they can remain in their homes during financial hardship, and support innovative solutions that expand access to affordable housing and strengthen community stability.

Education

Supports innovative solutions across PreK–12 education and beyond. Grants may enhance classroom learning, provide school supplies and resources, expand tutoring or mentorship programs, and address educational opportunity gaps. By investing in education, this focus area helps strengthen student success and build a brighter future for Marion County.

Mental Health & Substance Abuse

Expands access to services addressing growing community needs. Grants may support counseling, prevention and education initiatives, recovery programs, and partnerships connecting individuals and families with vital resources. By investing in mental health and recovery, this focus area strengthens well-being across Marion County.

Each focus area is supported through a dedicated sub-fund and guided by an advisory board composed of community leaders with relevant expertise and a shared passion for creating meaningful and lasting change. The advisory board helps ensure that resources are directed strategically to programs and initiatives making a measurable difference in Marion County.

The Community Fund is also an ideal option for donors who wish to make charitable gifts through Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) or Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs). Contributing to the fund allows donors to simplify their giving while ensuring their support addresses critical needs across our community.

The Community Fund also provides the flexibility for the Community Foundation to pivot when new or urgent needs emerge within Marion County. As our community evolves and new challenges arise, the Foundation can establish additional focus areas to address those issues and direct resources where they will have the greatest impact. This adaptability ensures the Community Fund remains responsive, strategic, and positioned to meet the changing needs of our community for years to come.

As changemakers, your generosity through the Community Fund helps address our community’s most pressing challenges today while building a stronger, more resilient future.
